Method
- Cut the watermelon into small cubes, discard the external layer, and remove as many seeds as possible.
- Place the chopped watermelon into a dish, tray, or tub and freeze until completely frozen.
- Peel a couple of strips of orange zest from the orange.
- Cut the orange in half and squeeze out the juice, measuring 1/3 cup.
- Add the frozen watermelon, sugar, orange peel, and orange juice into a blender or food processor.
- Blend the mixture until smooth.
- Pour the blended mixture into a tray, tub, or dish and freeze for at least two hours.
- Every 30 to 40 minutes, scrape and break apart the mixture with a fork until a crystalized shaved-ice texture forms.
- Serve and enjoy.
Notes
Store the granita in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months and scrape again before serving for the best texture. Serve as a refreshing dessert alongside light salads, grilled foods, or fresh fruit platters.
